Trondheim to Stryn via Atlantic Highway and the Trollstigen.
Day started ok with the run along the E39 fromTrondheim to yet another ferry at a place called Halsa. This stretch is about 60 miles of smooth bends undulating for the first half along a wooded valley and the second mostly along the side of a fiord. The type of road you can go very fast along but better when you dial in a speed and try to keep off the brakes!!
Off the 20 minute ferry and head to Kristiansund - big mistake. This town is accessed by two undersea tunnels, one in the north And one in the south, both with tolls so going through Kristiansund to get to the Atlantic Highway is an expensive option to the total of 99nok.
This didn't put me in a good frame of mind for the Atlantic Highway which hops from islet to islet at the edge of the ocean. I was a bit underwelmed as it's only about 6 miles long altogether with the high curved bridge in the middle being the most interesting. I would suggest not getting too excited about it.
After that excitement it's south on the 64 through Molde, another f@@@ing ferry, Andalsnes and then the highlight of the day the Trollstigen. Approached from the north up a valley, the road then goes up the mountain via 11 hairpins and 1:12 slope and around a waterfall to boot( stigfossen falls). At the top there's the usual tat stalls, but a newly installed viewing point with glass walls, holes in the floor etc to freak out the scared of heights gang, who frankly shouldn't be there in the first place.
Over the top of the pass it's kind of bleak and icy and then down the valley to the choice of two ferries across the fiord. One straight across to Geiranger, but I chose the other at Stranda and then route 60 via Hellesylt, Hornindal and then Stryn.
View of geiranger fiord just as you come out of the tunnel at a place called Ljoen.
Staying three nights at Stryn and planning to do day trips to see what's around.
