When you get off the boat at Moskenes on Lofoten, one of the first things that strikes you is a smell of fish- not overpowering, but certainly there. This is why....
Not all the codheads are in Grimsby!
Racks of dried fish all over - around the harbours, by the road, peoples back gardens, it's everywhere. The second thing is the astounding scenery. It's only 40 miles from the ferry port to where I'm staying but it took me 2.5 hours to do it as I kept stopping at every viewpoint. I think it's best described as tolkienesque. See what I mean....
More of that tomorrow as I'm staying at Ballstad for two evenings, so plenty of time for a tramp around.
I'm in an old wooden fisherman hut - rorbu they're called, and it's ok. Power, fridge, coffee machine? and en suite.
The rate is 432nok (£51) per night for the cabin, but it sleeps two as most of the rooms do, so Steve/Nige are costing me money!! If you get to know the ins & outs, Norway can be very reasonable for accomodation if there's a couple of you.
The folk who run the huts also run a bar - 70nok for 500ml, which is about £8.30!!!! Better not have too many of them then.
