Found these pics the other day. A trip I did on the Pan following the route of the Elfstedentocht. (Eleven Cities Tour). This is a speed skating race, almost 200 km in length, and follows a route along frozen canals, rivers and lakes visiting the eleven historic Frisian cities: Leeuwarden, Sneek, Ijlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker, and Dokkum then returning to Leeuwarden. The race is held only if the ice is, and remains, at least 15 centimetres thick along the entire course as about 15,000 amateur skaters will take part. The last race was held in 1997.

Stopped overnight in Leeuwarden before starting the tour, and was planning to stop in Dokkum on the second night, but the place was so quiet and I swear I could hear banjos playing, so an executive decision was made to blast the 115miles back to brothers place in Amsterdam - good move and a lively night was had by all!!!
